Less surf rock than their previous work, “Dreams Tonite,” is the new single from Alvvays’ upcoming album Antisocialites and finds itself at home in the world of sleepy shoe-gaze ballads. Musically, the song is as simple as they come, focusing more on Molly Rankin‘s soft-spoken vocals, a change from previous efforts like “Archie, Marry Me” and “Next of Kin.

If I saw you on the street
Would I have you in my dreams tonight?

The lyrics paint a portrait of longing for a relationship that once was strong. Lines like, “Who starts a fire just to let it go out,” brings the experience to life and suggest she hopes the other person feels the same pain as she does. “Dreams Tonite” signals a new direction for Allvays that’s a bit of a surprise, but I’m excited to see how it pans out over the course of an entire album. Antisocialites is out September 8th.
