It’s hard to pick a favorite song from Hazel English’s recently released LP Just Give In / Never Going Home, but closer “That Thing” is the albums most complete song. The perfect amount of synth and guitar bop along to a lo fi drum beat that conveys just the right amount of lust and conviction to match Hazel’s lyrics and vocals. The grungy bridges and the outro give the song the kind of breaks that I would like to have seen more of throughout the album, and are super effective here. Hazel’s second LP stands far away from the “sophomore slump” category, and “That Thing” is the standout.
